Biography
Italian-German soprano Alessia Schumacher enjoyed a very musical upbringing, beginning her studies with the violin at Conservatorio „Giuseppe Verdi“ in Como before turning to voice. She completed her vocal training at the Hochschule für Musik „Hanns Eisler“ in Berlin, the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona and was a member of the excellency program Barock Vokal in Mainz. She also holds degrees in History of Art and Musicology from the University of Vienna.
Still a student, she celebrated her debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker (Menotti/The Telephone, 2015) and soon after appeared at Konzerthaus Berlin as Gretel (Humperdinck/Hänsel und Gretel, 2016). She returned to Konzerthaus in 2018 as Mimì in La Bohème and in 2019 as the Narrator in the world premiere of Iván Fischer’s Der Grüffelo.
From 2019 to 2022, Alessia sang Grilletta in Lautten Compagney Berlin’s celebrated production of Haydn’s Lo speziale under Wolfgang Katschner, with appearances at Teatru Manoel in Malta and at numerous theatres across Germany and Switzerland. In 2020, she reunited with the Berlin Philharmonic, as Cercatrice in Puccini’s Suor Angelica under Kirill Petrenko.

Her 2020-21 season included her debut as Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus at the Schlossfestspiele Ettlingen and Pamina in Die Zauberflöte reloaded in several Swiss theatres. She continues collaborating with Lautten Compagney Berlin, performing the female lead in Cimarosa’s “L’impresario in angustie” (2022-2025) in theatres across Germany.
In 2024, Alessia toured Germany and Austria with the Flying Steps in Flying Hänsel und Gretel and made her role debut as Violetta in Verdi’s La Traviata.
An equally committed concert artist, her repertoire spans from Haydn and Beethoven to the early and late romantics all the way to contemporary works. Recent highlights include Tippett’s A Child of Our Time and Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at the Philharmonie Berlin in 2024, where she returned for Händel’s Messiah in 2025. Marking 80 years since the end of WWII, she returned to the Filharmonia Pomorska for Kilar’s Missa pro pace.
Alessia is also passionate performer art song and chamber music, working closely with pianist Alissa Firsova, vibraphonist Hauke Renken, and clarinetist Bernhard Nusser (DSO).
Since meeting renowned artist Lee Mingwei in 2020 Alessia has performed his work Sonic Blossom with songs by Franz Schubert at the Gropius Bau in Berlin, the Villa Stuck in Munich, and the Museo d’Arte Orientale in Turin.
Alessia has been awarded a number of scholarships (Bernbeck Exzellenzstipendium, DAAD, Luzia-Loeser Kulturfonds), she is an alumni of the Yehudi Menuhin Foundation „Live Music Now“ and received the prestigious Bayreuth scholarship in 2016. She is a prize winner of international competitions, a.a. the Concorso lirico internazionale „Piero Boni“ in Brescia (1st prize, 2017) and the Schloss Rheinsberg Festival competition (Michaela role debut 2017).
